Whitney Houston (1963-2012)

"I Will Always Love You" brought me back to 1990's memory of me listening to her original CD bought by my brother when he was in Taiwan. He bought tons of CD much to my delight as a teenager who loved musics. The sound quality was much better than that of my collection of cassettes.

#1 Video: I Will Always Love You

"When You Believe" is a soul-enchanting song that relive the memory of my university life at hostel in Johor. It shone out hope and dream in me whenever I was lost in myself.

#2 Video: When You Believe

"I Look To You" reminds me of a MSN acquintance who used to chat with me quite often when I was in Penang. It also reconnects me to my life in Penang. I guess I may want to reconnect to MSN messenger again to say hi to her by any chance. I quit since 2010.

It is saddening that another celebrity of my life has left us. Life is so fragile yet inspiring.

Dream Comes True (美梦成真)

As usual when our fast food outlet closed shop at 10pm sharp, we would start to perform the daily cleaning. The cashier didn't have to do any cleaning as they would be busy calculating the money collected in their respective cash register machines. As back up staff who took order from the cashier and prepared most of the meal, we had the most utensils, plates and trays to clean up.

Normally the leftover food on the trays was kept at minimal quantity. An hour before 10pm, the cook would only prepare the fried chicken based on direct order. I would only serve two to three packets of fries and wedges on the trays. Due to company policy, any leftover food must be disposed of and staff was not allowed to consume it. Of course I would grab some of the nudgets/fries to fill in my hungry stomach before packing all the leftover into a rubbish bag for disposal.

The hardest part of cleaning was the fried chicken trays. The crispy flour stuck stubbornly on the trays that it could only be removed with hard-brushing over hot water. To make cleaning easier, I soaked all the trays into the hot water for several minutes before doing the brushing to get rid all the sticky crispy flour. The final part of cleaning was the floor when everyone would get drenched to the skin. The whole cleaning work took about an hour before we called it a day.

Usually I reached home around 11.30pm when everyone was already sleeping. After shower, I would watch some music videos especially Valen Hsu's Dream Comes True (美梦成真) for an hour or more before I could sleep. Although this routine happened 12 years, I would always miss the memory of sweet and sour whenever I listen to Valen Hsu's Dream Comes True (美梦成真).

Anime Festival Asia 2011 - AFA11 (13 Nov 2011 Sunday)

Anime Festival Asia 2011: By 9.00am, a long queue had already been formed towards the redemption counter. Luckily I had bought and redempted the entrance ticket a day before. The entrance to the largest Anime Convention in South East Asia opened shortly after my arrival. To my surprise, the morning crowd on the last day was much lesser than that of previous year AFAX.

Anime Festival Asia 2011 - AFA11 (Preview IV)

Anime Festival Asia 2011 is bringing back a huge human traffic at Suntec City Convention Level 4 on day two. As a banquet is being held at the atrium on the same level, cosplayers choose to hang out at the corridor along the AFA halls, thus worsening the traffic flow as compared to last year event. I managed to get "I LOVE ANISONG" concert+Festival+Stage Sunday ticket for tomorrow session with Kalafina (カラフィナ), May'n, Milky Holmes, angela & Itou Kanako. Looking forward to my first Japanese anime song concert!

A Love Before Time 月光愛人

A Love Before Time aka 月光愛人 is one of the most memorable song which greatly soothes my mind in 2000 when I was pursuing bachelor's degree. The meaningful Chinese lyrics delivered by Coco Lee (李玟) with her awesome and angelic vocal accompanied with the musical sound of traditional Chinese instruments makes this song truly epic. In fact, Coco Lee (李玟) performed the English version of this song in Academy Award 2000 as it was nominated for Academy Award for The Best Song. 10 years on, this song remains as one of my favorite song to listen to whenever I need to soothe and relieve my mind from the reality stress.

SingaPOP! 2011 @Promontory Marina Bay

SingaPOP! concert pays tribute to 50 years of pop music development in Singapore, in parallel with 50 years of Singapore's economic development. For the first time in Singapore, SingaPop! features a stellar line-up of of Ah-Do (阿杜), Dick Lee, Douglas Oliverio, Jack and Rai, John Molina, Kit Chan (陈洁仪)Ling Xiao, Olivia Ong (王俪婷), Rahimah Rahim, Sakura Teng, Taufik Batisah, Tokyo Square, Vernon Cornelius, Najip Ali and many more, complemented by a Superband of top musicians, dancers and a bold, vibrant multimedia extravaganza.

I reached the concert venue at Promontory Marina Bay quite late at 7.50pm, 10 minutes into the show. My mistake of thinking it is located at Esplanade cost me one hour time of walking from City Hall MRT to Esplanade Bay and vice-versa before I realized it is located opposite across the bay which is about 15 minutes walk from Raffles City MRT. Every cloud has its silver lining. It saved me from getting wet because of a brief raining. Weather was very good and cool after the rain stopped.

The main stage and audience seats are actually built on a reclaimed land at Marina Boulevard. Even as I was approaching the stage from afar, the music was super clear. At time nearing to the start of the concert scheduled at 8pm, I was surprised to be able to chope the front standing area which is so close to the main stage although this event is free seating and standing,

Being in the concert itself was like riding on a time machine. The nostalgic and momentous era of from 60's to 21st century, this musical time machine rode us on, are so heart-warming. All thanks to Dick Lee for his brilliant brainchild and the sponsorship from DBS, Keppel Corporation, MasterCard Worldwide, Sembcorp, DHL, ExxonMobil, GlaxoSmithKline, Kulicke & Soffa and Makino.

Journey to Spice Up Your Life - Elson Soh (苏奕铨) & Royal Artistes - The Final Showcase 9 July 2011

This is my first time being to Singapore Expo and attending a concert at The Max Pavillion, Singapore. We arrived at the The Max Pavillion around 7pm. The organiser's staffs were already there to permit ticket holders to enter the concert hall which can accommodate to 6000 people. One hour before the scheduled 8pm concert as I had expected, there were very few people around the entrance.

To kill time, we strolled around at other area in Expo. Indeed, this place is as huge as an airport and definitely larger that Suntec City Convention Centre. Quite numbers of activities and exhibitions were going on here such as Robinsons Sales, wedding dress exhibition and a live singing band at the centre of food and beverage area.

At 7.45pm, we went back to The Max Pavillion. The scene of crowd at the entrance did stir up our excitement. I expected 3000 people would be there that night for Elson Soh's debut concert. At 8pm, the show hasn't started yet and the front seat zone was not even half full with audiences. I was perplexed why people turned up so late as it was publicly announced that the front seat zone tickets are already sold out. By 8.30pm, there were about 2000 people seated with some rows of vacant seat. The concert started soon after with powerful cheering from the audiences. William Soh, who is Elson's manager, hosted the concert.

Elson didn't show up until the rest of Royal Artistes had showcased their performances which were just fine, not great yet not bad. Elson kicked off his debut concert with a lively song "I'm In Love With It" which I like it very much. It was the same song I heard when I first saw him in public appearance at Chinatown on New Year 2011. Next, Elson sang his promotional song for Go Green Campaign, Eco Music Challenge 2010. He belted out the rest of his original ballad songs; Every Minute (每分鐘),Our Promise(说好一定要幸福),Say You Love Me (说一次你爱我),If Only You Knew, and You'll Never Be Mine.

As Elson fans shouted out "Elson, I love you" every now and then, he surprisingly hit out his song quote "说一次你爱我(Say You Love Me)". It definitely drove his fan crazy echoing again their shouts. It was amazing to see him perform "If Only You Knew", "You'll Never Be Mine" and LeeHom's "All The Things You Never Knew (你不知道的事)while playing the baby piano. Exclusively for his Malay fans, Elson even wrote and performed his first Malay song "Cinta Pada Mu (Loving You)" in collaboration with Love Hunters. Guest artistes, Lorraine Tan and J.Ai were also invited to perform on the stage.

Elson's vocal range is indeed incredible throughout his showcase. I personally prefer his lower range of vocal notes which has similarity to Ah Du (阿杜)'s. As Elson prepared for his final song, Malaysian Penangite singer cum composer, Bryan Teoh (张永佳) performed "Absence (缺席)" live with the baby piano. His vocal performance is as good as Elson's. Elson ended his two-and-a-half-hour debut concert with super-high "Spice Up Your Life". As the concert started late at 8.30pm, it ended around 11pm. By then, quarter of the audiences had already left.

Luckily we boarded the last train at Expo MRT to the city just in the nick of time. Feel so glad to be part of the memories where the youngest ever local artist performed a full fledge concert in Singapore. がんばれ。

Rebecca Black's Friday vs Katy Perry's Last Friday Night

Friday was released on 14th March 2011 by ARK Music Factory as Rebecca Black's debut single. It becomes a viral hit instantly on youtube due to critism of the song's lyrics, gaining 3.1 million dislikes (87% of total rating). On 16 June 2011, the official video has been removed from youtube due to copyright infringement claim by Black's family. Yet youtube viewers can still watch this video uploaded by other users.

On 12 June 2011, Katy Perry's Last Friday Night was released on youtube with over 17 million views as of now. Friday craze continues.

Celine Dion (Part 3)

When I was in upper secondary school, I loved to do homework at a designated study table on the first floor of my home. I could do my additional maths for 3 hours continuously at night while listening to radio. Celine Dion's hits were frequently aired on the radio that her "All By Myself" was part of my study tune. Her latest rendition of "All By Myself" as below is unbelievably as powerful and beautiful as what she did in 1996. Unlike many other singers who perform at a lower par as compared to their first performances. I wish I could watch her singing this melancholic and nostalgic hit live one day.

Elegant and powerful "All By Myself"

More to come...

Modern Children (Hong Kong)

Singapore Baybeats 2010 @Esplanade brought in Modern Children, an Indie band from Hong Kong, who not only uses guitar, drum and bass in their performance. Various toy instruments are utilized to make their musics even lively, colourful and fun. Their live performance was expectedly entertaining and great.

2AM vs 2PM results in One Day.

I bet whoever watch Korean drama and love OST would find 2AM and 2PM sounds familiar as they participated in OST. 2AM and 2PM are both South Korean ballad boyband consists of 4 and 6 members respectively. I came across a youtube on 2AM and 2PM's back-to-back performance and wonder if they will ever do duet as "One Day" band.

2AM (Left to right: Seulong, Changmin, Jokwon, Jinwoon.

2PM (Chansung, Wooyoung, Nichkhhun, Junho, Junsu, Taecyeo).

2AM vs 2PM performance

Actually they are originally from a same group of 11 members, called as One Day! 4+6=11? Yes and no, as one of their member had left the group due to his controversial personal blog, dated 6years ago, resulting in the splitting of One Day in 2009. So blog wise and never leave a trail of shame or guilt as they will come back to you as karma in your next life if not this lifetime!

No offence to ardent fan of 2AM/2PM, I don't have the "burning-crush" as I have for Celine Dion and Mariah Carey to catch up with every songs and news of them. But 2AM's musics video on their recent "You Wouldn't Answer My Call" is surprisingly good. Not a typical boy band hit.
